Tra i tanti libri a cui si è ispirato Walt Disney per i suoi “classici” c’è anche il libro “I cento e uno dalmata” (1956) della scrittrice inglese: Dodie Smith (1896 – 1990).
Il film è più sbrigativo e differisce dal libro in molti punti, per esempio Peggy si chiama Missis e i due cani sono i “padroni” degli umani e non viceversa, preferendo un punto vista canino.
Dodie Smith amava i dalmata e ne ha sempre posseduti, anche dopo la morte del suo amato Pongo (coincidenza?), prese sempre altri cani che ebbero addirittura 15 cuccioli, uno dei quali si pensava fosse morto ma venne poi rianimato dal marito di Dodie, e questa scena fu inserita nel film di animazione della Walt Disney del 1961.
In Inghilterra Dodie Smith è stata ed è molto apprezzata come scrittrice, il suo romanzo più famoso, “Ho un castello nel cuore” (I capture the castle) del 1948, nel 2003 diventò un film: “Il profumo delle campanule”.
In Italia è pubblicata da Mondadori e Rizzoli.
