“Bombay sa di curcuma, cardamomo, zenzero, zafferano e peperoncino…”.
Agni vive a Bombay con la sua famiglia in un quartiere molto povero.
Sua madre e suo padre gli ripetono continuamente che sono poveri, ma lui non sa cosa vuol dire, perché non conosce una condizione differente dalla sua.
Agni ha nove anni ed è un bambino che lavora: ogni giorno va al lavatoio del signor Kumar insieme ad altri ragazzi della sua età e lava panni dal mattino al tramonto, dal lunedì al sabato.
Agni si considera fortunato perché a Bombayaltri bambini fanno lavori più pericolosi del suo: chiedono l’elemosina per la strada o stanno in bilico sui piccoli pulman per turisti in mezzo al traffico rischiando la vita.
Il lavoro al lavatoio proprio non gli piace: Agni ha sempre le mani a mollo per lavare i vestiti di qualcun altro, ma sua madre lavora come donna delle pulizie e suo padre lava i vetri ai semafori , così i soldi non bastano mai. Però è Agni lavora con abnegazione, perché non vuole che sua sorella più piccola, Lalita, un giorno debba fare la sua stessa vita.
Agni ha anche un fratello più grande che sa leggere e gli legge i nomi dei paesi e delle città stampati su un mappamondo che tiene appeso al muro, così lui può sognare di viaggiare e visitare tutti quei posti che non trovano spazio su una cartina geografica.
Però la vita di Agni va avanti divisa fra il lavatoio, la sua famiglia, i suoi coetanei con cui gioca a calcio e il cinema nel quale riesce ad entrare quasi sempre senza pagare grazie al proprietario, il signor Shanti, che lascia passare lui e i suoi amici.
I giorni sono tutti uguali, tranne la domenica quando a casa di Agni si mangia la frutta e occasionalmente qualche pesce, poi alcune domeniche tutta la famiglia va al mare.
La monotonia di quei giorni viene spezzata quando un giorno, cambiando strada insieme al suo amico Abhay, Agni fa una scoperta straordinaria: poco distante da casa sua c’è uno strano edificio: una scuola, la Scuola dell’Infanzia Pipeelika.
Una scuola?
Che cosa succede dentro una scuola? Perché da quell’edificio escono dei bambini vestiti tutti uguali?
Agni e Abhay decidono di indagare.
Un romanzo leggero, nonostante il tema trattato, che racconta la vita di Agni proprio attraverso i suoi occhi di bambino che non vedono la povertà come la vedono gli adulti.
Quello che in occidente è considerato un diritto dell’infanzia in India non lo è affatto: troppi bambini cominciano a lavorare dopo aver compiuto cinque o sei anni, senza avere la possibilità di ricevere un’istruzione che potrebbe elevarli dalla loro condizione.
Una scuola è una guerra silenziosa che molte persone (come il personaggio della signorina Anuradha Singh della Scuola per Infanzia Pipeelika) combattono per dare ai bambini come Agni un’istruzione e, di conseguenza, la possibilità di migliorare la loro condizione di vita.
Perché, anche se ormai noi la diamo per scontata, l’istruzione fa la differenza!
Un romanzo delicato, a tratti filosofico, ci mostra il mondo di Agni, la sua famiglia, i suoi amici, quello che ama mangiare e la sua personale visione del mondo. Un mondo semplice descritto in una cartina appesa al muro, un mondo dove ad Agni non serve il denaro per regalare una stella.
