Questo libro racconta la vita e il lavoro di una donna poco conosciuta ma con un grande primato: Christine de Pizan (1364 – 1430 circa), è stata una scrittrice, filosofa e poetessa italiana naturalizzata francese, ed è riconosciuta in tutta Europa come la prima donna scrittrice di professione.
Questo albo illustrato ci presenta la storia di Christine così come è arrivata a noi e del grande lavoro che lei ha fatto per rovesciare i luoghi comuni sull’inferiorità delle donne nel periodo storico nel quale è vissuta: il Medioevo.
Christine ebbe un’infanzia molto felice alla corte di Carlo V di Francia dove suo padre era dottore e astronomo personale del re. La fortuna di crescere in un ambiente così pieno di stimoli culturali fu la base della sua educazione, ma la felicità non durò a lungo, dopo qualche anno perse suo padre e suo marito (segretario del re), rimanendo da sola con tre figli.
A quel punto per Christine cominciarono i guai.
Una donna senza la protezione di un uomo nell’epoca in cui visse era facile preda di dicerie e creditori che le chiedevano di risarcire debiti inesistenti solo perché suo padre e suo marito non potevano smentirli.
Così Christine “diventò uomo” e imparò a gestire tutto quello che le pioveva addosso. Lavorava come storica e come copista in un piccolo “scriptorium” di sua proprietà (la macchina da stampa non era ancora stata inventata e i libri si ricopiavano a mano) e un giorno le capitò di inciampare negli scritti di alcuni letterati che si elevavano a giudici additando le donne come esseri inferiori e inclini ad ogni vizio e debolezza.
Ma Christine sapeva che non era la verità, lei stessa era costretta a combattere tutti i giorni un mondo patriarcale, così decise di rispondere a queste calunnie nell’unico modo che conosceva: con la sua immensa cultura.
E Christine scrisse.
Guidata da tre nobili dame: Ragione, Rettitudine e Giustizia la giovane vedova scrisse di un’utopica città ideale abitata da tutte quelle dame che non furono sempre di sangue nobile ma nobili di spirito.
Scritto tra il 1404 e il 1405, “La Città delle Dame” (“Livre de la Cité des Dames”) è probabilmente l’opera più famosa di Christine de Pizan. Christine sosteneva fermamente che l’impossibilità per le donne di imparare, unita all’isolamento tra le mura domestiche e all’esclusiva cura dei figli, avevano causato la (presunta) inferiorità femminile e la conseguente assenza dalla scena culturale, e lo fa portando come esempio tutte quelle grandi donne del passato che si erano distinte per coraggio e intelletto.
La regina Semiramide che fece costruire Babilonia, la grande guerriera Pentesilea che viene citata nell’Iliade, Carmenta che inventò l’alfabeto latino, Ortensia l’avvocatessa romana e Saffo la grande poetessa… sono solo alcuni esempi della virtù femminile degna di abitare nella Città delle Dame.
Un albo elegante con splendide illustrazioni dal gusto medievale per cominciare a conoscere un po’ meglio questo grande personaggio storico.
